A home rematch against the Douglas College Royals Saturday night saw a much-sharper Capilano Blues side push the PACWEST-leading visitors each set before ultimately dropping a 3-1 decision.
The Blues dramatically tightened up their receive of serve from Friday (see Vanesa Gatto interview below) and made much better passes to setter Kirsten Carta which allowed the offence to set up. It paid off for Maya Griffith in a big way as she racked up 11 kills including four in the first set which went to extra points before the Royals won it 28-26.
Douglas went up two sets to none but CapU didn't fold, winning the third set 25-20. Grace Brisebois chipped in two of her seven kills in the third set while Griffith picked up two of her four aces.
Nnya Mboama was a force at the net Saturday with three big solo blocks in addition to six kills.
Also improved on the weekend was the Blues service game which was problematic last time out against College of the Rockies. Courtney Muller, Sibby Bos (video clip below), Carta and Brisebois combined for five aces Saturday
Friday night, Douglas made the most of the big right arm of outside hitter Lauren Attieh, and took a three-sets-to-none victory over the host Blues.
Attieh had multiple kills each set, frequently set up by Royals setter Bailey Dorohoy, as the visitors improved to 12-2 on the season.
The Blues had trouble with the Royals service game and were not able to consistently make clean passes to their young duo of setters Carta and Faith Sahota who were both in and out of the rotation throughout the evening.
Griffith showed off her lefthanded swing at times for the Blues as she picked up three kills in the third set. The second-year outside hitter also scored a pair of aces from the service line.
Annika Kuznik was one of the more effective Blues attackers Friday as she picked up a couple of clean kills in the opening set.
CapU's next game will be at the PACWEST provincials which are being hosted Feb. 24 to 26 at Columbia Bible College in Abbotsford.
A huge block for Sibby Bos midway through the fourth set as the Blues look to claw back a few points and extend the match to a fifth set! #GoBlues pic.twitter.com/q5SOI6oSzq Capilano University Blues (@CapilanoBlues) February 13, 2022
