Mackenzie Smith's first double-double of the season paced the Capilano Blues Saturday night in a 71-50 win over the visiting Langara College Falcons that moves the Blues PACWEST record to 11-4.
Starting for the second-straight night, the Blues' 6-foot-3 post scored 19 points and grabbed 10 rebounds which gave her 36 and 19 for the Friday-Saturday doubleheader.
Though Smith got to work straight away with seven points in the first quarter, it was a Jessica Castillo three-pointer and a layup from Rachel Labrador that put the Falcons up in the opening minutes. Smith was efficient around the basket and with an offensive board and put back, she put the Blues ahead five minutes in and they never trailed again.
Meagan Briggs came off the bench to score 12 points and grab nine boards while Devon Wood scored 10 in a starting role. Ida Jonsson-Ojala had just two points but snagged 18 rebounds while Kirsten Abo hit for 14 including three from downtown.
Friday, facing a visiting Langara side that was forced to work with a guard-oriented lineup, Blues forwards Smith and Jonsson-Ojala took over the low block, combining for 29 points and 21 boards in a 67-31 victory.
Smith got off to a quick start with six of her game-high 17 points in the first quarter while Jonsson-Ojala had six in the second quarter, on her way to a double-double (12 points, 12 rebounds) as the Blues built a 21-point lead at halftime.
CapU hoisted a ton of threes Friday night but didn't have much success, shooting just 5-for-37 from beyond the arc. Again it was Blues forwards showing the way as Briggs connected on the first Blues triple of the night and Emma Jones came off the bench to hit a pair of threes.
Jones (video clip below) was productive in her 19 minutes as she had eight points, seven rebounds, five assists and three steals.
Next up is the PACWEST provincial championships happening March 3 to 5 at Columbia Bible College in Abbotsford.
