A slow start cost the Capilano Blues in their first game at the CCAA national championship Friday evening in an eventual 88-78 loss to the Humber Hawks.
Shots were not falling early for the Blues and the tournament host Hawks took full advantage, running up a 16-0 lead before Sam Bailey got Capilano on the board with a fadeaway jumper just past the five-minute mark of the first quarter.
The Hawks had a 16-point lead after the first quarter and held a 48-31 at halftime. Though the Blues outscored the home side in each quarter of the second half, Humber kept Capilano at arm's length and never relinquished the lead.
Bailey, who ended up with 19 points and 10 rebounds, was named player of the game for the Blues.
Next up for Capilano is a matchup against the Filons de Thetford in a tip off at Noon Pacific time on Saturday.
