Georgette Reed Is CapU's New Athletic Director

Brent Mutis, CapU Sport Information & Compliance Officer

Capilano University’s Department of Athletics and Recreation is pleased to announce the hiring of Georgette Reed as its new Athletic Director.

A former Canadian Olympian, Reed comes to Capilano University after a 10-year career at the City of Edmonton, most recently as the Health and Wellness Coordinator with Edmonton Fire Rescue Services.

She will succeed Milt Williams who has been with Capilano University for 30 years, the last 10 as Athletic Director.

Reed’s focus on physical and mental health, her design and implementation of proactive programs, and her athletics background as an athlete and coach moved her to the top of CapU’s list of candidates. Additionally, Reed’s experience working with local government bodies and Canadian sport delivery systems, strategic planning, and fiscal responsibilities made her an ideal fit.

“I am honoured to be selected as the next Director of Athletics and Recreation for Capilano University,” said Reed. “Milt has built an incredible foundation for myself and this incredible staff to work together and build upon.

“With my background in health and wellness, recreation and athletics, I look forward to bringing my energy, experience and passion to contribute to what will be exciting times ahead here at CapU."

Prior to her time with the City of Edmonton, Reed spent 10 years as head coach of the Cross Country and Track and Field team at the University of Alberta where she earned her Master's degree and became a sessional instructor in the University’s kinesiology department.

Reed’s athletic career took her to the pinnacle of competition as a member of Team Canada at the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona, Spain where she competed in track and field. She also represented Canada at the 2001 World Athletics Championships in Edmonton and the 1994 Commonwealth Games in Victoria, B.C. Reed is a 17-time national champion with 15 shot put titles and two in discus.

"With our institutional focus on well-being as the core of our vision, and a deep history of varsity achievement, we are beyond delighted to have Georgette joining us and steering the future of Athletics and Rec," said CapU Associate Vice-President, Student Success Daniel Levangie. "Her combination of high-performance experience, well-being leadership, and personal passion are exactly what CapU needs."

A native of Regina, Sask., Reed is the daughter of Canadian Football League Hall of Famer George Reed and like her father, she attended Washington State University (WSU) in Pullman, Wash. Reed was an All-American in shot put for the Cougars and remains a WSU record holder in the event.

Milt Williams' last day with Capilano University will be March 28, 2022 with Reed starting in her new role on April 4, 2022.
