Seeing her first significant playing time of the season, first-year Blues middle blocker Anna Liniewski came through with 10 kills and was in on three blocks as CapU handled the visiting Columbia Bible College (CBC) Bearcats three sets to one Saturday night at the Centre for Sport and Wellness.
Capilano got off to a quick start in the opening set, taking a 7-1 lead on the strength of a Daphiny Kung serving streak which forced CBC to take a timeout. The Bearcats tightened up the score after the recess but were not able to get in front with CapU taking the opener 25-19.
The second set was close throughout but Blues outside hitter Maya Griffith got into a groove and put away several of her team-leading 14 kills on the night. Griffith's powerful lefthanded swings helped the home side to a 25-22 win in the second set.
CBC was in command of the third set all the way and Blues coach Rob Gowe opted to provide playing time for some players off the bench. The Bearcats took the third set 25-12.
Going back to his best lineup for the fourth set, Gowe was rewarded as veteran setter Kelsey Towers continued to distribute the ball on her way to 35 assists for the night. Towers was able to set up Courtney Muller for eight kills and added five of her own.
Nnya Mbaoma came through with two clutch digs late in the final set and wound up finishing the game with a smash set up by Towers.
Next up for the Blues is a road game Saturday, Jan. 22 at 6 p.m. at Douglas College.
