Capilano Blues men’s volleyball head coach Michael Gilray is moving on from his post after one season on the job.
Gilray began working with the Blues during training in the 2020-21 year which saw no games due to the pandemic. He was officially hired as the team’s bench boss in May of 2021.
Under Gilray, CapU began the 2021-22 PACWEST season with three-straight wins including an impressive Nov. 12 victory over eventual conference champions Camosun College. The Blues ended up in fifth place with a 7-8 record.
CapU dropped their opening game at the PACWEST provincial tournament, a 3-2 setback at the hands of the College of the Rockies which ended the season.
Gilray had previous PACWEST coaching experience with the women’s team at the University of the Fraser Valley (UFV) and took over the Blues job from Dave Dooley.
“I’m super thankful to (CapU Athletic Director) Milt Williams and to Dave Dooley for giving me an opportunity to get back into the PACWEST,” said Gilray. “I was extremely lucky to have Dave as an assistant at UFV and to come here and work with the group he put together was a great experience. Being part of the Capilano community has been amazing.”
A pair of Blues players were awarded PACWEST honours while playing for Gilray this past season. Third-year outside hitter Rafael Hilario was named a PACWEST First-Team All-Star while rookie outside hitter Jesse Lee was named to the PACWEST All-Rookie Team. Hilario led the Blues in kills with Lee posting the next highest total on the team.
“Blues Athletics would like to thank Mike for providing his coaching leadership over the past year,” said CapU Athletic Director Milt Williams. “Mike’s dedication to the program was greatly appreciated as he guided the team in this transition year. I would like to personally thank Mike and his family for the many hours spent coaching and providing support and guidance to the men’s volleyball team.
“We wish Mike all the best in his future endeavours.”
The search for Gilray’s replacement begins immediately.
