Moreira Is New Men's Volleyball Coach

Brent Mutis, CapU Sport Information & Compliance Officer

The Capilano University Department of Athletics and Recreation is pleased to announce the hiring of Darrin Moreira as the new head coach of the Blues men’s volleyball team.

A former Blues volleyball player, Moreira was part of a PACWEST gold-medal winning Capilano side in 2013 playing under coach Nathan Bennett.

Moreira has recent coaching experience as an assistant at the USports level, spending last season with Trinity Western University’s women’s team. For three seasons prior to that, he was the lead assistant with the men’s team at UBC-Okanagan.

His hiring is the first made by new CapU director of athletics and recreation Georgette Reed.

“I am excited to have Darrin join our CapU athletics staff and take over the reins as the men’s volleyball coach,” said Reed. “Darrin’s drive, vision, experience and passion for the game are commendable and will be a benefit as we build a solid foundation for our men’s team.”

Moreira earned a kinesiology diploma from CapU before going on to complete a master’s degree in high performance coaching and technical leadership at UBC.

His coaching resume also includes experience at Volleyball Canada where he’s been a head coach for the Regional Excellence Program in Kelowna. He led the Team BC boy’s side to a gold medal at the 2019 Canada Cup.

“Returning to Capilano, where I played with the Blues, feels like a true homecoming to me,” said Moreira. “Georgette and her staff are aiming for a world-class athletics culture at CapU and I'm grateful for their faith in my ability to be the caretaker of the men's volleyball team.

“Most important to me is that every player leaves as a better person than when they arrived. Better people make better volleyball players; that's what our program is going to be about.”

Moreira takes over the Blues men’s team from Michael Gilray who coached the team for one season. In 2021-22, the Blues recorded a 7-8 record in a COVID-shortened 15-game season before dropping their first game at the PACWEST provincials.
