Playing their first back-to-back weekend since late November, the Blues needed to dig deep into the energy reserves in a Saturday night overtime win over the visiting Douglas College Royals.
Devon Wood had probably her best game of the season, coming off the bench to provide 16 points, five rebounds and two steals. Her contribution at both ends, tipping passes and diving for loose balls, was a major reason the Blues came out on top despite the fact she fouled out in the fourth quarter.
Ida Jonsson-Ojala had six points in the first half but was just getting started on a massive night, and second consecutive double-double, looking more comfortable in what was her third start of the season.
The 6-foot-2 native of Norrköpping, Sweden played her best in the fourth quarter, racking up seven rebounds to give her 13 points and 16 boards on the night one night after going for 18 and 11 at Columbia Bible College (CBC).
Douglas worked hard to take away space from sharpshooting Blues guard Jenna Griffin but the Port Moody-Heritage Woods product still managed 11 points and six boards to go along with four dimes.
CapU had a good look at a buzzer-beating bucket but Alanya Davignon's layup just lipped out (video below).
Friday night at CBC, in addition to Jonsson-Ojala's double-double, Camie Ward and Mackenzie Smith each had 12 points in an 83-48 victory.
Blues coach Chris Weimer was pleased with a two-win weekend and with the depth shown by his roster with production from throughout the lineup (interview below).
Next up for the Blues (7-4, third in PACWEST) is a Feb. 5 road game at Camosun College. Friday, Feb. 18 will be the next home game; a 6 p.m. tip off against Langara College
