Holding the visiting Camosun Chargers (5-3) to 30 percent shooting and outscoring them each quarter, the Capilano Blues (4-3) bounced back Saturday afternoon to earn an 85-61 win to split the weekend set.
Jenna Griffin joined the starting five Saturday after coming off the bench to replace an injured Kirsten Abo Friday and she continued her outstanding work as she led the team in scoring again on 8-for-12 shooting on her way to 18 points.
Capilano put a firm grip on things in the second quarter, outscoring Camosun 22-12, with Mackenzie Smith going 3-for-3 from the field and Camie Ward scoring five points off the bench.
It was more of the same after halftime as the Blues were dominant in the third with starters Smith, Griffin, Devon Wood, and Emma Jones each scoring multiple buckets. Each Blues player wound up hitting the scoresheet on the night with the bench combining for 30 points led by eight from rookie forward Madeleine Coffin.
On Friday in the opener, Griffin came off the bench to score a Blues season-high 26 but CapU was were bested by one point in a 70-69 setback.
Griffin, who subbed in early for Abo, got hot in a hurry by going 6-for-7 from the field including a pair of threes, and helped the Blues to a 19-12 advantage after the first quarter.
Camosun turned the tables by outscoring CapU 19-12 in the second quarter to tie it at 31 at halftime.
Capilano's Meagan Briggs had a big third quarter, scoring 12 of her 14 points on the night and putting the Blues up five heading to the fourth quarter. The Chargers would have the final say however as they hit five threes in the final frame including three from downtown by Chelsea Espenger.
Camosun shot just 48.9 percent from the free-throw line for the game but got to the line for 29 attempts while CapU was just 6-of-11 from the stripe.
The Blues are scheduled to next be in action Friday, Dec. 3 at Okanagan College. Recent weather and travel disruptions may interfere with that so follow the PACWEST schedule for updates.
