The PACWEST season begins in full the following weekend, Nov. 5 and 6, and the Blues host Columbia Bible College in the season opener with the women's game at 6 p.m. followed by the men's game at 8 p.m.
Last time there was a full PACWEST season, the Blues women finished second in the regular season with a 15-3 record, behind only Vancouver Island University (VIU). Hosting the 2020 PACWEST provincial tournament, the Blues women ran into VIU again in the PACWEST gold medal game but again had to settle for second, despite 20 points from fifth-year guard Reiko Ohama.
The Blues top returning players are Mackenzie Smith, a 6-foot-3 post who was a PACWEST all-star in 2020, and versatile forward Devon Wood who averaged seven points and five boards a game in 2019-20. Incoming import forward Meagan Briggs, who transferred to CapU from Langara after the 2019-20 season, will play a key role and 2020 recruit Jenna Griffin will finally have a chance to show off her game after a year of practice-only repetition.
On the men's side, the Blues have a new coach in Alex Van Samang who took the reins in June 2021 after former coach Cassidy Kannemeyer moved on to an assistant coach role at University of the Fraser Valley.
The Blues boast returners CJ Campbell, who tied with Martin Bogajev for the team lead with 17.6 points per game in 2019-20, and long-range bomber Michael Kelly, a North Vancouver product who led the Blues with 37 three-pointers made in 2019-20.
