The Vancouver Island University (VIU) Mariners came into Saturday afternoon's contest carrying an 8-0 record and the host Capilano Blues were not able to snap that win streak, suffering a 72-50 loss.
Mariners guard Ranika Guyton came off the bench to lead all scorers with 15 points, including 10 in a decisive third quarter that put the visitors in command.
Jenna Griffin, for the third consecutive game, led the Blues in scoring with 11 points. Kirsten Abo added 10 while veteran forward and captain Meagan Briggs came off the bench to contribute seven points and seven rebounds.
Briggs (interview below) said it was difficult to face the conference's top team after not playing in over a month but the game against VIU highlights areas for the Blues to improve as they work their way towards the playoffs.
Saturday afternoon's game also marked Capilano debuts for Swedish import Ida Jonsson-Ojala (four points, three rebounds, three blocks) as well as guards Lauren Tomlinson and Sydney Ma.
Next game for the Blues (now 5-4 in PACWEST play) is Friday, Jan. 28 at Columbia Bible College. Tip off is 6 p.m. The Blues are home the following night, Jan. 29, in a 6 p.m. start against Douglas College
