Despite 23 points and perfect three-point shooting from Tyrone Asenoguan and a double double from Harry Liu, the Capilano Blues dropped a tight 89-83 decision to the host Camosun College Chargers Saturday afternoon.
Asenoguan was 5-for-5 from three-point territory, with four of those triples coming in the second quarter, while Liu grabbed six of his 12 rebounds during a fourth-quarter push that just came up short as the Blues dropped to 8-5 on the season.
Camosun got points from all its starters in the first quarter and held a five-point lead after 10 minutes. Asenoguan’s assault from downtown in the second quarter helped the Blues eat into the Chargers’ lead but the home side led 43-42 at halftime.
Matthew Hampton got hot for Camosun in the third, scoring 12 of his 22 points on the night on 5-for-5 shooting to put his team up seven heading to the fourth quarter.
CJ Campbell saved his best for last for the Blues, scoring eight of his 12 points in the fourth but it was not enough to overcome the Chargers. His layup with 39 seconds to go put the Blues within four and prompted a Camosun timeout. Capilano was forced to foul the Chargers after that and the home side went 7-for-9 from the stripe over the final 34 seconds to close out the win.
Camosun improved to 12-4 on the season and look set to be the No. 2-seed going into the PACWEST postseason.
The Blues sit in third place in the PACWEST standings and likely won’t catch Camosun but will have to secure another win to stay out of reach of fourth-place Langara.
Next up for the Blues is a home date Sunday, Feb. 13 with Okanagan College paying a visit to the North Vancouver campus. Tip off is 3 p.m. at the Centre for Sport and Wellness.
