CapU Blues women’s basketball shared the ball and some positive vibes in their final PACWEST game before the exam and holiday break with a 72-57 road win Tuesday night over the Douglas College Royals.
A season-high 23 assists as a team helped the Blues to a second straight win after three consecutive defeats in late November. They officially got back in the win column Nov. 27 with a home win over Camosun though Tuesday’s result was the team’s first road win of the season.
Former Royals guard Cassandra Brinn was key in a dominant Blues second quarter, scoring seven of her 13 points on the night including her first three-pointer of the campaign.
Brinn’s contribution earned CapU a 16-point lead at halftime and another convincing frame in the third put the visitors up 24. Jenna Griffin hit twice from beyond the arc and scored eight of her game-high 18 points in the third.
Having a healthy lead allowed Blues’ coach Chris Weimer to get minutes for the rest of the his lineup and he was rewarded with double-digit scoring off the bench from rookie forward Madeleine Coffin (10 points, four rebounds), 11 points and seven boards for veteran forward Emma Jones while Camie Ward notched seven points and five assists.
Madeleine Counsell hit her first three of the season and starter Devon Wood filled the stat sheet with a game-high eight rebounds to go along with her two assists and a steal.
Next up for the Blues (5-3) is an exhibition game Friday, Dec. 17 at Simon Fraser University. Tip-off is 4 p.m.
The Blues are in a three-day tournament over the holiday break, Dec. 29, 30 and 31 at Vancouver Island University (VIU), where they will face USports side the University of Victoria, PACWEST rival Camosun as well as Keyano College of the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference.
Next PACWEST games that count are in the New Year; CapU visits Douglas again on Wednesday, Jan. 11 in a 7 p.m. start and their next home game is Saturday, Jan. 22 with VIU in town for a 1 p.m. start.
