Scoring nine of his team-high 19 points in the fourth quarter, including two dunks, Tyrone Asenoguan helped the Capilano Blues to a 91-89 victory Saturday afternoon over the Filons de Thetford that puts CapU into the bronze-medal semifinal game at the CCAA national tournament.
Brenden Bailey got the Blues off to a nice start, drilling a three before the game was a minute old and ensuring his team wouldn't have to endure another dry spell from tip off as they did Friday against Humber.
CapU went on to score 29 in the first quarter, led by 10 from Bailey on 4-of-7 shooting. Thetford matched Capilano in the opening frame however and it was 29-29 after 10 minutes. Martin Bogajev got into a rhythm in the second quarter for the Blues and went 4-for-4 from three-point range which helped his team to a 50-47 lead going into halftime.
Both teams struggled to score the ball in the third quarter but Thetford managed to take a 65-63 lead to the final frame. The teams remained neck and neck over the final 10 minutes and just when Thetford appeared to establish some breathing room, it was Bailey again, finishing a basket-and-the-foul to bring CapU back within one at 80-79 with just over four minutes to go.
Asenoguan then put his stamp on the win with two steals leading to breakaway dunks plus another layup all in less than two minutes. His layup with just over two minutes put the Blues in front for good.
With eight assists, five rebounds and three steals to go along with his 19 points, Asenoguan took player of the game honours for Capilano who will play on Sunday in a consolation semifinal against the loser of Saturday afternoon's game between St. Clair College of Windsor, Ont. and PACWEST foe Vancouver Island University. The winner of the consolation semifinal will play for bronze in a 2 p.m. Pacific time start.
Tip off for the Blues is 7 a.m. Pacific time on Sunday.
