With Week 1 of PACWEST soccer in the books, CapU's Department of Athletics and Recreation has named its Athletes of the Week (AOTW) presented by WestPark.
On the women's side, Kayla Campbell gets the first AOTW of the season. The Burnaby, B.C. native, who is the younger sister of Blues hoops guard CJ Campbell, scored the tying goal for the Blues in her first-ever PACWEST game Sunday, a 2-2 draw with the Douglas College Royals.
After getting rained out at home Saturday, the Blues took a 1-0 lead in the second half Sunday but they soon found themselves down one after Douglas scored a pair of quick goals. That set the stage for Campbell in the 80th minute as she ran onto a ball just inside the 18-yard box and sent a drive over the head of the Royals keeper and into the net to level the score.
For the men, Nima Moazenizadeh earns AOTW honours. In his first game in Blues colours, Moazenizadeh notched a brace, lifting CapU to a 4-3 away win over the Douglas College Royals.
After finishing a nice cross from Jeremy Monn-Djasngar for his first goal to make it 2-0, Moazenizadeh authored a stunning strike for his second as he corralled a ball just past the midfield circle and drove a blast high and over the head of the Royals keeper, catching him off his line to make it a three-goal lead. The second-year arts and sciences student finds himself atop PACWEST scoring after one week of play.
