Getting a lot of firsts out of the way in their season opener Sunday afternoon, the Capilano Blues ran up a four-goal lead and then hung on as the host Douglas College Royals mounted an injury-time comeback scoring three times late before the final whistle in a 4-3 result.

It was the game and first win for Blues coach Adam Day who was hired in January of 2020 only to have the ensuing PACWEST season erased due to the pandemic. Sunday's win also saw the first goal of defender Eric Swanson's Blues career as he converted on a corner kick to open the scoring early on.

Another first came from Nima Moazenizadeh who slotted home a feed from Jeremy Monn-Djasngar for his first Blues goal in his first game to make it 2-0 CapU. Moazenizadeh then made it a brace with an unbelievable goal from just inside midfield as he caught the Royals keeper off his line and sailed a drive over his head and into the net.
Monn-Djasngar would make it 4-0 Blues when he gathered a bouncing ball in the area and drove it home for the eighth goal of his Blues career.
The game appeared to be on cruise control for CapU and first-year keeper Marcus Biagi even made a save on a penalty kick but eight minutes of injury time were added owing to a lengthy second-half delay and Douglas managed three goals in a five-minute span to make things interesting before the game ended.
Next up for the Blues is a home date on Saturday, Sept. 25 with the Langara College Falcons coming to CapU for a 3:30 p.m. start.
