The Capilano Blues held up their end of the bargain.
With a home-and-home set against the Douglas College Royals to finish up the PACWEST women's soccer regular-season schedule, CapU claimed wins of 3-1 at Douglas Saturday and 2-0 at home on Sunday to give themselves a shot at first-place in conference.
Unfortunately for the Blues, the Vancouver Island University (VIU) Mariners also took all six points in their home weekend with two wins over Langara College to maintain top spot and earn the No. 1 seed for PACWEST Provincials which earns them a bye to the gold-medal game.
On Saturday at Douglas, CapU got their first and third goals from fifth-year captain Ada Babinski (interview audio below) sandwiched around a goal from Mya Fraser on their way to the two-goal victory. Babinski, Fraser and Maya Smith finish the season tied for the team lead in goals with four each.
On Sunday, the Blues got first-half goals from veterans Aynsley Hurtado and Alanah Dulong and got a clean sheet from the goalkeeper tandem of Megan Thitchener and Sabrina Lam in the two-nil victory that pushed the season record to 8-3-1.
Sunday's game was the final regular season home game for Babinski who was honoured after the match along with Catrina Olstrom, Hurtado and Dulong.
The PACWEST Provincials are next for the Blues. As the second-place team in the conference, CapU will play in the semifinals on Saturday, Oct. 29 as the No. 2 seed and will face No. 3-seed Douglas College once again. The winner of Saturday's semifinal will advance to the gold-medal game Sunday against top-seeded VIU.
Kickoff is set for 1:30 p.m. for both the semifinal Saturday and the gold-medal game Sunday. Check the PACWEST website for details about the provincial tournament.
