Head coach Dennis Kindel spoke with CapU Athletics ahead of the season opener about some of the team's new faces and how the side has handled preseason and prep for the campaign ahead:
Here are some news and notes ahead of kickoff as the Blues attempt to pick up where they left off in 2021.
- Blues veteran defender and two-time PACWEST conference all-star Alanah Dulong may find herself further upfield this season. At 5-foot-7, she is one of the Blues taller players and her speed and anticipation may make her a more dangerous weapon around the opposition net and on set pieces.
- Taylor Colby should be a focal point of the Blues attack. She is the Blues top returning scorer, having notched four tallies a year ago, and with Kayla Campbell and Claire Ye no longer with CapU, she will be depended upon for finish
- Captain and fifth-year veteran Ada Babinski would like nothing more than a repeat trip to nationals to finish a fine Blues career. She will once again anchor the midfield and be counted on for service and leadership.
- A recruiting class including Sophie Pather, Jacqueline Reinhard, Elizabeth Van Hombeeck, Ella Jennings, Jessica Fong, Alexis King and Alex Roed will more than likely see significant action in their rookie seasons. The Blues have a smaller roster than this time last year and all personnel will need to supply quality minutes. The quicker the new crop gets up to speed with the PACWEST game, the better the Blues chances are to repeat as champs.
- Some home cooking to start the season may be just what Nanaimo native and Blues second-year midfielder Kai Belbin needs to make her mark in 2022. Limited in 2021 by a depth of veteran talent ahead of her, Belbin should feature more in the Blues attack this season. Heading home on this Island road trip could prove just the spark needed to begin the new campaign.
