In a fitting final home game Saturday for Blues graduating seniors Meagan Briggs and Mackenzie Smith, the pair tied for the team lead in scoring with 16 points apiece to help Capilano to an 83-42 win over the visiting Columbia Bible College (CBC) Bearcats.
CapU started slowly Saturday, making just three of 19 shots in the opening frame and found themselves down 16-10 but Briggs and Smith dragged the Blues out of the doldrums in the second quarter, combining for 17 points including a corner three from Smith which delighted the crowd and the Blues bench. It was the second made three-pointer in the 6-foot-3 Smith's Blues career.
The Blues held an 11-point lead at halftime and increased it in the third quarter on the strength of Ida Jonsson-Ojala's 12 points. Maddy Coffin got six of her 10 points in the third and totaled six boards and three assists as well. Sydney Ma scored nine on 4-of-5 shooting.
Sam Leyenhorst was CBC's top performer Saturday with 12 points and eight rebounds.
In the weekend opener Friday night, a resounding first half performance was more than enough for the Blues against the Bearcats in an 89-41 final.
CapU broke the 30-point mark in each of the first two quarters and held CBC to six points in the second frame as the home side built a 40-point lead at halftime. Briggs had 11 points in the first 20 minutes while Ma came off the bench to score eight.
Every player in the Blues lineup hit the scoresheet Friday with five players scoring double digits led by Kirsten Abo's 17. Venica Davignon grabbed a team-high seven rebounds while Abo swiped six steals.
Capilano is on the road to conclude the PACWEST regular season as they head to Okanagan College for games Feb. 17 and 18. Friday's game is a 6 p.m. start while Saturday's will be 1 p.m.
