Capilano University and the Department of Athletics and Recreation are pleased to announce the hiring of Steve Millar as the new head coach of the Blues men’s soccer team.
Millar has an extensive playing and coaching background and currently works as head coach of multiple teams within the Fusion FC club program, competing in the B.C. Soccer Premier League. He has a great deal of experience coaching men’s players at the U21 level, most recently with Fusion’s Vancouver Metro Soccer League and provincial championship winners. Millar holds a National B license coaching certification from the Canadian Soccer Association.
“We are extremely excited to have someone with Steve’s experience, drive and commitment to the sport of soccer on board leading our men’s program,” said CapU Athletic Director Georgette Reed. “Steve’s reputation for growing the whole student-athlete is commendable and I look forward to creating a solid foundation for a winning culture.”
As a player, Millar represented Canada as a member of the national youth team and was part of the player pool in preparation for the 1992 Olympics. After earning a provincial soccer title with North Delta Secondary in 1988, Millar attended Simon Fraser University where he competed for one season with the varsity soccer team before embarking on an international and professional career.
Millar played six seasons between the Canadian Soccer League and the American Professional Soccer League, including stops with the Winnipeg Fury, Edmonton Brick Men and Vancouver 86ers, the club he concluded his pro career with in 1994. Since retiring as a professional player, Millar has been a firefighter with the City of Vancouver, attaining the rank of Battalion Chief.
“Capilano University has a rich history of producing very successful athletic programs and over the years, Blues men’s soccer has fielded incredible teams and many outstanding players,” said Millar. “I look forward to working with these players and creating a culture and environment, for them to thrive both on the field and in their academics.
“I am confident we will bring many successes this program has been known for and we will represent the University extremely well.”
With Capilano, Millar is inheriting a Blues side that was not able to find the win column last season but returns several key pieces including PACWEST All-Star midfielder Luca Martinelli, goalkeeper Kia Ahmadpour, leading returning scorer Adam Majuerae and talented young striker Chase Doucette.
Millar and the Blues Department of Athletics and Recreation are working to fill out the coaching staff and will have assistants in place ahead of the 2023 PACWEST season.
