Not much was working for the Capilano Blues in their Friday-Saturday visit to Douglas College last weekend.
CapU failed to take a set Friday and accumulated just 43 points as a team in a straight-sets loss that took just an hour and 10 minutes to complete.
The Blues weren't able to muster an ace Friday while Douglas had 10 and the home side had 12 stuff blocks to just two for Capilano. Annika Kuznik had the high kill total with four while Vanesa Gatto had three as she split her night between libero and outside hitter.
Coming back Saturday, CapU put forth a better effort but not enough to overcome the nationally No. 8-ranked Royals who took it in four sets.
Playing with a heavily braced left leg, Grace Brisebois registered eight kills, her highest total since Nov. 25 against Columbia Bible College. Stephanie Sung was a bright light to the Blues as well Saturday as she moved to outside hitter and picked up a career-best seven kills on just 20 swings.
Maya Jovic and Anna Liniewski also had seven kills Saturday with the latter adding two aces and three blocks in a productive night.
With the pair of setbacks at Douglas, Capilano's record now sits at 3-15 in PACWEST play, which puts them in a tie for fifth. There are not enough games remaining to catch fourth-place College of the Rockies and with this year's PACWEST provincial championshp tournament being just a four-team event, the Blues will not qualify for the field.
There is one weekend remaining in the regular season and it will also be a difficult assignment with No. 6-ranked Camosun College coming to CapU Feb. 17 (6 p.m. start) and Feb. 18 (1 p.m. start). It will be the final game in the career of Courtney Muller who will be honoured as part of Blues Senior night on Feb. 18.
