A successful road trip with two wins at Camosun College has the Capilano Blues (9-1 PACWEST) tied with Vancouver Island University for top spot in the conference.
Ida Jonsson-Ojala led the Blues in scoring both games at Camosun, including a double-double of 13 points and 17 rebounds in a gritty 61-55 win Friday to start off the weekend.
It was a slow start for the Blues Friday, as they shot just 3-for-11 from the field and 0-for-6 from the free throw line to find themselves trailing 12-7 after the first quarter. Teigan Manson brought Capilano to life in the second quarter with two threes and eight points while Maddy Coffin added a spark off the bench with four points in five minutes.
Jonsson-Ojala, as has been the case in recent games, saved her best for last after being held scoreless in the first half. The 6-foot-2 import from Sweden scored eight points and grabbed five rebounds in the third quarter and added a block as CapU took a 44-42 lead to the final frame.
The Chargers hung around, getting nine points from Rhiannon Ware in the third. Capilano did just enough in the fourth quarter to secure the win with Alexa Kusel playing the entirety of the final frame and chipping in two points, two assists and two rebounds. Jonsson-Ojala had five points and seven boards over the final 10 minutes.
Saturday's outcome was less in question as Capilano took control early, turning a 12-point first-quarter lead to a 20-point advantage at halftime. Jonsson-Ojala was 6-for-7 from the field and perfect on four attempts from the free throw line in the opening 20 minutes and was given much of the second half off. She finished with 18 points and five boards.
Coffin was again productive off the bench Saturday with 14 points, eight rebounds, four assists and two blocks. Alanya Davignon was another bright light in a reserve role as she had four steals to go along with a season-best six points. Mackenzie Smith fashioned a double-double on 11 points and 12 boards.
The PACWEST schedule has CapU at Langara for the next two games, Friday, Jan. 27 and Saturday, Jan. 28. Both games are 6 p.m. tipoffs.
