Facing the team at the bottom of the table twice on the weekend, the Capilano Blues took care of business with a pair of wins and keep first place in the PACWEST in sight as the schedule goes into its final regular-season set.
The Blues posted their first clean sheet of the season Sunday, a tandem effort for goalkeepers Sabrina Lam and Megan Thitchener, with Taylor Colby supplying the lone goal in a 1-0 victory over the Langara College Falcons.
Colby's first of the season was set up by a fine cross from Alanah Dulong (interview below) who once again made several dangerous run up the wing on Sunday.
On Saturday, CapU conceded the first goal of the game to the Falcons, a penalty kick awarded to Rachel Barker who converted putting it just inside the post and out of the reach of Lam. The Blues had a response handy however when they were given a penalty kick of their own when Alexis King was tripped up in the area. It was up to fifth-year midfielder Ada Babinski to take the shot and she deposited it just inside the right post to even the score.
The score remained tied until the 76th minute when Dulong volleyed a long looping shot beyond the reach of Falcons keeper Christina Sofikitis and into the net for the game winner.
Lam, playing her first game in four weeks after returning from injury, played all 90 minutes in goal.
With a record now of 6-3-1, the Blues sit a point back of Vancouver Island University (VIU) who carry a 6-2-2 mark.
Capilano will conclude the regular season next weekend with two games against Douglas College while VIU hosts Langara for a pair.
The Blues visit Douglas Saturday, Oct. 22 for a 1 p.m. start and kick off at 1:30 p.m. the next day with Douglas paying a visit to Mulgrave School.
