Mya Fraser's header goal in the first half of Sunday's contest allowed the Capilano Blues to finish up their Vancouver Island road trip with a point as they played to a 1-1 tie with the Vancouver Island University (VIU) Mariners.
Converting a feed from Julia Peyton, Fraser's first goal of the season gave the Blues a 1-0 lead in the 35th minute. VIU tied the game in the second half and that's how it would end.
Megan Thitchener made her first start as Blues goalkeeper and provided solid work in net as she made 11 saves.
Sunday's draw came a day after VIU took Saturday's season opener by a 4-2 score. VIU opened up a two-goal lead in the first half Saturday but CapU fought back after halftime on goals by Peyton, her first PACWEST goal, and Jessika Thaler with a goal in the 81st minute that looked like it might earn the Blues a tie but VIU's Abby Duncan was awarded a free kick shortly after from just outside the Blues area and she converted with a low drive just inside the post.
The home side would add another in the final moments as CapU pushed forward looking for another equalizer.
The Blues visit the Douglas College Royals for their next game, a 1 p.m. kickoff on Saturday, Sept. 17 at Coquitlam's Town Centre sports complex.
CapU's home opener is the following day, Sunday, Sept. 18, which will be a 1:30 p.m. start against Langara College. All Blues home games in 2022 will be played at Mulgrave School in West Vancouver (2330 Cypress Bowl Lane).
