After sustaining a straight-sets loss on the road Friday at the College of the Rockies (COTR), it might have been easy for the Capilano Blues to offer an uninspired showing the next night and head for home.
Instead, Capilano had what might be their most determined effort of the season, a five-set loss Saturday that may provide something to build on heading to a Nov. 25-26 set of home games.
CapU lost 25-22, 25-18 and 25-23 on Friday as attacking errors got in the way. The Blues committed 16 faults at the net compared to just five for the CCAA’s No. 5-ranked Avalanche.
Friday’s leader for Capilano was James Fong who produced six kills, two aces and three solo blocks.
No player on either team got into double-digits in kills Friday as the home side earned the win in the minimum number of sets.
With a short turnaround to Saturday’s game, the Blues were a focused team and got 17 kills in the first set, winning it 25-23. After the Avalanche evened the match with a 25-19 win in the second set, CapU put themselves in position for their first victory of the season with a 25-21 third-set win but they made four attacking errors in the fourth set and dropped the final set 15-12.
Going the distance Saturday was a point to draw encouragement from for the Blues but their errors on the night were the story. CapU committed 34 service errors to just 18 for the Avalanche.
The big right arm of Colby Soolsma delivered four more aces for the weekend, two each game. Setter Jenson Yuen had probably his best game of the season Saturday with 45 assists while adding three kills and two blocks.
Jesse Lee was also in form on Saturday with 17 kills, a team and season high.
Next up for the Blues are home games against Columbia Bible College. On Friday, Nov. 25 and Saturday Nov. 26, the Bearcats will visit CapU’s Centre for Sport and Wellness and both games are scheduled for 8 p.m. starts.
