Career nights from Maddy Coffin and Sydney Ma lifted the Capilano Blues to their fourth consecutive win, an 85-55 victory Friday over the visiting Okanagan College Coyotes, as the Blues enter the exam and holiday break.
Coffin came off the bench to score 21 points on 6-of-11 shooting and was perfect on nine tries from the free-throw line. The 5-foot-11 forward's post-up game gave the smaller Coyotes trouble while Ma repeatedly drove to the hoop and showed a deft touch on several runners in the lane on her way to 11 points on 5-of-9 shooting.
CapU made an early statement, staking a 27-9 lead after the first quarter. Fifth-year forward Mackenzie Smith (interview audio below) got right to work on the glass with five boards in the opening frame on her way to 10 for the night.
It was the second consecutive game with double-digit rebounds for the 6-foot-3 Burnaby product. Thursday at Douglas College, Smith went for 15 points and a season-high 14 boards in a 63-55 win over the Royals.
Buckets were tough to come by most of the night for both teams. The difference for CapU was holding the Royals to 11 points in both the second and fourth quarters. Point guard Kirsten Abo contributed 15 points, five assists and three steals while Teigan Manson hit three time from beyond the arc on her way to a 14-point night.
Coming off the bench, Venica Davignon didn't score but pulled down seven rebounds including four on the offensive glass. Meagan Briggs came within a couple of stats of a triple-double as she had eight points, nine boards, and six assists.
After the break, CapU hosts Douglas College January 13 and 14, a Friday-Saturday doubleheader at the Centre for Sport and Wellness. Both games start at 6 p.m.
