Josh Dhillon came off the bench to go 8-for-8 from the field and was perfect on all five three-pointers he tried on the way to 24 points as the Capilano Blues defeated the Okanagan College (OC) Coyotes 85-76 Friday night at CapU's Centre for Sport & Wellness.
After a sluggish first five minutes, CapU came on strong getting production from Ahmad Athman who had 10 points and two steals in the opening quarter. The Blues had an 11-point lead after the opening frame and, with Dhillon heating up in the second quarter with 13 points, built a 53-32 lead going to halftime.
OC held Capilano to just 15 points in the third quarter and chipped away at the Blues lead as Tariq Bhanji drained a pair of his four threes on the night. The visitors also outscored CapU in the fourth quarter and got as close as five points with three minutes remaining but a spectacular 360 dunk from Tyrone Asenoguan, a basket from Dhillon and a pair of free throws from Marko Cosic sealed the deal for the home side.
For associate head coach Jason Price (interview audio below), the pair of wins this week is a high note to finish the 2022 part of the schedule and also a nice rebound after last week's resounding loss at Vancouver Island University and a nervous win over Columbia Bible College.
On Thursday night at Douglas College, the Blues got seven threes from Russell Curley and scored more than 20 points in each quarter, leading from start to finish in a 97-82 win over the Royals.
CapU held Douglas to just nine points in the opening quarter and Curley drained two of three from downtown to help his team to a 13-point lead. The home side warmed up in the second quarter led by Ekman Sohal's 11 points and got to within three at 45-42 going to halftime.
Coming out of the locker room, Capilano took control of the game again as Asenoguan dropped 10 of his 20 points on the night while Cosic had six. Shakir Yakubu and Josh Vandevelde had five and four points respectively in the third and each had a blocked shot.
Lucas Egitto and Scott Watson each saw their first action of the season, each grabbing a rebound.
CapU is next in action in the New Year for a Friday-Saturday homestand Jan. 13 and 14 with Douglas College visiting the Blues gym in a pair of 8 p.m. starts.
