A trying season has come to an end for the Capilano Blues after a 2-0 defeat Sunday to the Douglas College Royals.
CapU ends up 0-10-2 on the season and out of the postseason picture for the second year in a row.
On Sunday, hosting the Douglas College Royals in the second game of a home-and-home weekend, the Blues – as has happened throughout the season – controlled play for long stretches but couldn’t convert.
The game was scoreless at halftime but on two occasions when CapU’s formation broke down and the Royals had outnumbered chances, they capitalized. Behrad Hajimohammadi and Milton Castro scored 10 minutes apart for Douglas to seal the win.
Merlin Fisk continued to direct much of the Blues attack and again looked like a threat but was unable to get a truly clean look. After subbing in in the 72nd minute, Ezra Kambidi hit the post in the late going.
Young Blues players Luke Frith, Chase Doucette and Adam Majuerae got valuable experience playing significant minutes down the stretch after the likelihood of qualifying for provincials was low. Frith in particular got plenty of touches Sunday and did well organizing the Blues in the midfield.
CapU didn’t lay down on Saturday at Douglas, even though the Royals raced out to a 4-0 first-half lead. Fisk scored twice in the second half as did Doucette, his second of the season with both goals coming at Douglas’ park. For Fisk, his four goals on the season is a career high. He and fellow graduating players Connor Cowan-Thompson, Eric Swanson, Chris Damian and Adrian Sahagun.
Another bright spot for the Blues was goalkeeper Kia Ahamadpour who played every minute of every game this season. The first-year competed hard all year despite little in the way of positive team results.
PACWEST Provincials are Oct. 29 and 30 at Mulgrave School. Douglas will face Vancouver Island University in the semifinals at 4:30 p.m. Saturday with the winner advancing to face Langara College in the gold-medal game Sunday, also a 4:30 p.m. kickoff.
