Another weekend of PACWEST soccer is in the books and the Capilano Blues picked up another point in the standings with a 2-2 draw Saturday against a visiting Douglas College Royals side.
CapU got on the board first Saturday with Connor Cowan-Thompson finishing a corner kick delivery from Adrian Sahagun in the eighth minute. For the fifth-year midfielder Cowan-Thompson, it was his first goal at the collegiate level.
The Royals drew level less than five minutes later and went ahead in the second half on a goal by Zachari Ouariti-Zerouali. That looked like it might stand up for Douglas to claim the win but Sahagun drew a penalty kick after getting knocked down in the area and he was able to beat Royals keeper Jacob McCall to even the score which is how it finished.
Sunday's result saw Vancouver Island University (VIU) come to CapU's home turf at Mulgrave School in West Vancouver and come away with a 3-2 victory. The teams were even much of the first half but VIU scored in the 45th minute and twice more early in the second half to stake themselves to a three-goal lead.
The Blues refused to lay down and wound up mounting a comeback effort with Adam Majuerae scoring his third of the season and Luca Martinelli getting his second on the campaign to get within a goal. With just a few minutes remaining, VIU was able to push the ball away from danger and preserved the win to improve to 2-2-2 on the season.
The Blues are now 0-4-2 and will try to get in the win column with a midweek game at Langara. Kickoff is scheduled for 8 p.m. Wednesday at Swangard Stadium.
