For 45 minutes Sunday afternoon, the Capilano Blues were the equal of the visiting Langara College Falcons but an extended first half injury time saw the Falcons score twice - all the goals they'd need - en route to a 5-1 win.
CapU's efforts Sunday were hampered by the fact they were without two players due to illness and they lost veteran fullback Jared Crane in the early going with an injury. At one point late in the game, just two Blues players were on the bench as subs.
Approaching the midway mark of the game with the score 0-0, Athos Michellepis de Siqueira was awarded a penalty kick and his blast to the upper left part of the goal was just out of the reach of a diving Kia Ahmadpour. Langara's Taku Ota scored his first of two goals on the day shortly after, putting the Falcons in command going to the second half.
Michellepis de Siqueira and Lucca Raymundo Geremia scored in quick succession early in the second half and Ota completed his brace in the 70th minute, giving the visitors a five-goal edge.
Veteran Blues midfielder Merlin Fisk broke up Blake Charlesworth's bid for a clean sheet with a pretty goal, lofted from distance over Charlesworth's head, in the 82nd minute. It was Fisk's second goal of the season, matching he previous career high from a season ago.
On Saturday, in a game hosted by Langara at Burnaby Lake Sports Complex, CapU's Luca Martinelli put two shots on goal but the Falcons scored the only two goals of the game in a 2-0 victory that was Charlesworth's fourth clean sheet of the season.
The weekend losses drop the Blues to 0-8-2 on the campaign and officially out of contention for a postseason berth.
Next up for the Blues is a Saturday-Sunday home-and-home set against Douglas College to conclude the season. Saturday's game is a 3:30 p.m. kickoff at Coquitlam's Town Centre with Sunday a 3:45 start at Mulgrave School.
