The Capilano Blues are in the win column after a three-sets-to-one win Saturday night over the visiting Columbia Bible College (CBC) Bearcats.
In their last chance to get a victory before the exam and holiday break, CapU won the first two sets before dropping the third and rebounding to claim the final set 25-22 on a big tandem block from Tate Wheatley and Jonah Violini.
The second set, which the Blues won 30-28, was critical with setter Jenson Yuen dialing up Stephen Searcy and James Fong (interview audio below) and the big men came through. The pair finished the set with three and four kills respectively, putting the Blues seemingly in command on the night. Fong ended the set with a nice first touch to Yuen who put it on a tee for a big smash and the 6-foot-7 middle man made no mistake.

CapU faltered in their chance to serve CBC with a straight sets loss like the visitors hande the Blues in the first game of the weekend. The third set went 25-17 to the Bearcats but instead of coming unraveled, Capilano showed some grit in a nervy fourth set where the teams traded points down to the wire. CBC had a late surge to tie the set at 22 but a Colby Soolsma kill gave serve back to CapU and with Fong serving for the match, rookies Wheatley and Violini combined to stuff CBC at the net to end it.

On Friday, the Blues suffered a straight-sets defeat to CBC where nothing seemed to be working for the home side. Illness had struck the team and some players may not have been 100 per cent healthy. Also, first-year outside hitter Chris Towner was sidelined with an injury so the Blues didn't have their best foot forward to open the weekend.
