Riding a 10-game winning streak, the Capilano Blues have matched the record of Vancouver Island University (VIU), who just so happens to be the next opponent coming into CapU's Centre for Sport and Wellness.
Most recently, the Blues picked up two wins away from home with victories over the Langara College Falcons which moves Capilano to 11-1 in PACWEST play.
The games at Langara showed the Blues' ability to win in a variety of styles. In Friday's decision, a 59-41 struggle where each team had difficulty scoring the ball, CapU did not make three-pointer for the entire game, shooting 0-for-10 from downtown while Langara shot 23 per cent for the game on 14-for-61 shooting.
The second quarter told the story for the Blues as they held Langara to just two points while Ida Jonsson-Ojala had nine of her 15 on the night. CapU kept the Falcons to just nine in the third quarter while Meagan Briggs scored eight of her 14.
On Saturday, a more free-flowing game unfolded as Kirsten Abo led the way with 21 points on 8-of-11 shooting in a 74-56 Capilano win. The Blues found their range from three-point territory with Abo, Camie Ward and Teigan Manson each hitting twice from beyond the arc.
Alanya Davignon continued to be a spark off the bench as she played a season-high 23 minutes and provided eight points, six rebounds and three steals while adding three assists as well.
Abo was the only player in double digit scoring for the Blues Saturday but was well supported by Ward, Davignon, Manson and Briggs who had eight points each.
With Jonsson-Ojala getting a rest Saturday, Maddy Coffin made her first start of the year and was one point shy of a double-double with nine points and 10 boards while adding two assists.
VIU, for their part, scored a pair of decisive wins at home over Columbia Bible College last weekend. In the last CCAA national rankings, they sat sixth in the poll while Capilano was fifth. With first place in the PACWEST up for grabs, the two teams tip off twice this coming weekend with games Friday, Feb. 3 (6 p.m. start) and Saturday, Feb. 4 (1 p.m. start).
