Blues Fall to Chargers 70-55 Despite Strong Effort Through Three Quarters
The Capilano University Blues battled hard but ultimately fell 70-55 to the Camosun College Chargers in a tough matchup on Friday. Despite keeping the game close through three quarters, the Blues were outscored 16-5 in the final frame, allowing the Chargers to pull away for the win.
Capilano showcased resilience early on, matching Camosun's energy through the first three quarters. The game saw eight ties and twelve lead changes, with the Blues even holding a five-point lead midway through the second quarter. However, the fourth quarter proved to be the difference, as the Chargers capitalized on their opportunities while the Blues struggled to find their rhythm offensively.
Offensively, Barcha Hnizdilova led the way for Capilano, notching a double-double with 17 points and 11 rebounds. Mia Parkin and Madeleine Coffin both added 11 points, with Parkin contributing four assists and four steals in an all-around effort. Jenna Griffin chipped in nine points and four assists, while Sereena Hothi provided a spark off the bench with five points.
Shooting woes plagued the Blues throughout the game, as they connected on just 29.7% of their field goals and 17.4% from beyond the arc. In contrast, Camosun shot an efficient 40.7% from the field and an impressive 47.6% from three-point range. The Chargers' sharpshooting ultimately proved too much for Capilano to overcome.
Despite forcing 25 turnovers and out-assisting the Chargers 16-13, the Blues struggled to convert those opportunities into points. Camosun capitalized on Capilano's 19 turnovers, scoring 20 points off them. Rebounding was another key factor, with the Chargers holding a 40-31 edge on the boards.
The Blues will have an immediate chance at redemption as they face the Chargers again tomorrow at 1 p.m. With lessons learned from today’s game, Capilano will look to tighten up their defence and find more consistency on offence to even the score.
