The Capilano Blues couldn't make it work for a full 40 minutes in either contest, dropping a weekend set at Vancouver Island University (VIU).
In Friday's opener, a cold shooting start sealed the Blues fate early as they scored just 16 points in the first half, while the host Mariners built a comfortable halftime cushion on the way to a 67-41 win. It was Capilano's lowest-scoring game of the season.
On Saturday, the start was much better as CapU got a pair of threes in the opening quarter from Lauren Tomlinson and two more in the second from Jenna Griffin to help themselves to a 35-32 halftime edge. The second half was a different story though as VIU guard Margarita Salas hit two threes of her own and the Mariners dominated the fourth, coasting home with Harriette Mackenzie scoring nine of her game-high 24 in the final frame.
Again, CapU leaned heavily on their starting lineup with the bench only able to chip in seven points over the course of the weekend. Fourth-year forward Maddy Coffin was the Blues' leading scorer both nights with 15 Friday and 17 Saturday. No other Blues shooter was able to get into double-digits in Friday's opener though Barcha Hnizdilova notched a double-double Saturday with 10 points and 10 rebounds.
Three-point shooting was much improved for the Blues Saturday after a 3-for-24 showing from beyond the arc on Friday. Each starter hit a three Saturday and continued contributions from downtown will help as the Blues try to find their way back to the win column.
VIU was also able to force CapU into some bad decisions with the ball over the weekend, with the Blues committing 49 turnovers to just 19 for the home side.
Capilano visits Okanagan College Feb. 14 and 15 before returning home to conclude the PACWEST regular season Feb. 21 and 22 against Camosun.
