The bookends were strong but the plot sagged in the middle for the Capilano Blues in a 77-69 setback to the Briercrest College Clippers in the bronze quarter-final at the CCAA National Championship Thursday.
CapU held a lead after the opening 10 minutes, getting seven points apiece from Kash Lang and Ahmad Athman, who each hit from downtown but the team was sluggish scoring the ball in the second quarter with only Lang able to make multiple buckets.
Coming out of halftime, the Blues remained stuck in neutral offensively with just David Featherston Jr. able to do any real damage as he netted seven of his 12 points and five of his 11 boards in the third quarter. Carter Waind had 12 of his game-high 20 points for the Clippers in the middle two stanzas, and was 2-for-2 from three-point range.
The Blues finished the game with their best offensive output, scoring 25 points in the fourth quarter but they allowed just as many as Briercrest maintained their advantage throughout the final 10 minutes. Ajay Hayer hit two threes in the fourth quarter on his way to 10 points in 21 minutes off the bench.
Capilano got to the free-throw line just 13 times for the game and converted only six times (46.2 per cent) while Briercrest was 20-of-25 (80 per cent) from the charity stripe.
Athman was named Player of the Game for CapU after recording 13 points, seven assists and seven rebounds in 36 minutes of work.
Up next for the Blues is the tournament placement game where they will face last year's national champion, the Keyano College Huskies. Tip off is scheduled for 11 a.m. PDT.
