The Capilano University Blues put up a valiant fight but ultimately fell to the College of the Rockies Avalanche in straight sets (25-21, 27-25, 25-18) in their latest PACWEST volleyball matchup. Despite their best efforts, the young Blues squad couldn’t overcome the firepower of the top-ranked Avalanche, who showcased their pedigree from start to finish.
The first set saw the Blues battling toe-to-toe with the Avalanche, keeping the game within reach before COTR closed it out 25-21. Led by standout second-year setter Avi Gill, who tallied 15 kills, Capilano demonstrated resilience and determination in front of a spirited home crowd.
The second set was where the Blues truly shined. Rookie outside hitter Xavier Masztak made his presence known with seven kills and two aces, helping Capilano push the set to extra points. However, COTR’s relentless attack, spearheaded by Diego Policarpo’s 25 kills, proved too much as the Avalanche eked out a 27-25 win, putting the Blues in a 2-0 hole.
The third set showcased both the Blues’ potential and COTR’s dominance. Capilano’s energy and flashes of brilliance kept them competitive, but the Avalanche maintained control, closing out the match with a decisive 25-18 victory.
Despite the loss, the Blues displayed their grit against the CCAA’s top-ranked team. With another opportunity to face the Avalanche tomorrow on home court, Capilano will look to build on this performance and turn the tables in North Vancouver.
