CapU Blues sports info
National Coaches Week is a time to celebrate the positive impact coaches have on athletes and communities across Canada. This annual campaign is an opportunity to recognize coaches for the integral role they play, and to take time to say #ThanksCoach!
At Capilano University, the Blues department of Athletics and Recreation is proud to salute our roster of coaches that fill so many roles for their athletes. Blues coaches prepare, train, mentor and advise CapU student-athletes to help them excel not only on the field of competition but as well-rounded people.
The Blues's longest-serving coach is Dennis Kindel who enters his 10th season in 2024. A former Blues goalkeeper and captain, Kindel backstopped the Blues to the 2003 CCAA National Championship. His Blues teams have won PACWEST medals on six occasions, including gold in 2021 when he was named conference Coach of the Year
Chris Weimer has the longest association with the Blues as a coach, having been an assistant with women's basketball for six seasons before taking over head coach duties in 2018. Weimer's teams have gone 73-21 under his direction, winning three silver medals at PACWEST provincials. He was named conference Coach of the Year in 2023.
Steve Millar enters his second season guiding Blues men's soccer. A year ago, he took a side that went winless in 2022 and kept them in playoff contention through to the final game of the 2023 season. A former professional player, Millar brings a wide variety of experience to the Blues bench, having played university soccer at SFU and having worked extensively in the local club football system.
On the women's volleyball side, the Blues enter their second season under the direction of John Swanson. Following up on a provincial silver medal and a trip to the CCAA national championship will be difficult but Swanson is pleased with the returning talent and incoming recruits as he hopes to keep the momentum going.
The other CapU coach that is a former Blues student-athlete is Markiel Simpson, who won a PACWEST banner with men's volleyball in 2013. He took the head coach role for his alma mater in April of 2024 and enters his first season on the Blues bench for the year ahead.
Jason Price takes the reins of Blues men's hoops this season having been an assistant in seasons past. A longtime assistant, Price has worked at the PACWEST and USports level prior to his time at CapU and he is also a veteran of the academy system, working with Drive Basketball. In 2024-25, Price gets to put his own coaching philosophy to work, hoping to improve upon a provincial bronze medal the team claimed last season.
