A pair of first-year Blues step up for their teams and earn Athlete of the Week recognition..
Amaya Salvino is the Capilano University Blues women’s Athlete of the Week.
The second-year goalkeeper was instrumental in the Blues silver medal performance at the PACWEST Provincial Championship last weekend.
On Saturday, Salvino made numerous saves to keep the Blues within a goal after falling behind by one goal in the 20th minute. Teammate Sophie Pather scored in the 89th minute to tie the match, which ultimately went to penalty kicks after extra time solved nothing. In PK's, Salvino scored the Blues first goal and made three saves to secure the victory over Douglas College.
On Sunday, she continued her strong performance, making numerous saves to keep the Blues within one goal of the VIU Mariners. She was named Player of the Match for the Blues.
She was named a Tournament All-Star as the Top Goalkeeper for her efforts.
Connor Collinson-Lea is the Capilano University Blues men’s Athlete of the Week.
The first-year outside hitter jumped out of the gym Friday, leading the Blues with 11 kills and contributing 12 digs as they pushed Douglas College to extra points in the fifth set.
The 6-foot-4 outside hitter was also impressive on serve receive, taking a team-leading 94 of the Royals' offerings and making strong passes to the Blues setters. Collinson-Lea totalled 18 kills for the weekend and chalked up one ace from the service line.
