With the PACWEST provincial tournament now a week away, the Capilano Blues have secured their spot in the standings after two wins at Okanagan College (OC).
No matter what happens in a regular-season concluding weekend Feb. 21 and 22 against visiting Camosun, the Blues know they will be the No. 3 seed in the PACWEST tournament after wins of 83-79 and 86-76 at OC last weekend.
In Friday’s opener, CapU did just enough in the second quarter to build the margin they’d need as the teams went almost bucket for bucket throughout the game. Kash Lang scored 11 of his team-high 19 in the second quarter, including a pair of threes as Capilano took a six-point edge to the break.
OC, despite their 1-21 record, made things extremely uncomfortable for CapU late in Saturday’s proceedings, taking a 76-75 lead with about two minutes to go but buckets from David Featherston Jr. and Damein Coleman restored the Blues lead and they managed to nurse home the win on a pair of made free throws by Ahmad Athman.
In Saturday’s rematch, Capilano seemed to be in command with a 19-point advantage at halftime but again, the Coyotes chewed into the Blues lead late in the game with Manny Biden scoring 12 of his game-high 27 over the final 10 minutes.
Arshya Ghasemi basically neutralized Biden’s late surge with 10 of his Blues-leading 17 points in the final frame. In 27 minutes off the bench, he also chipped in three assists, a block and a steal.
Featherston Jr.’s return after missing the Feb. 7-8 weekend is encouraging for CapU with the Arizona native scoring 23 points over 40 minutes of work in the two wins at OC.
Capilano (13-9) can’t be caught in the standings by fourth-place Columbia Bible College as the latter has finished their regular-season schedule. The Blues will be the No. 3-seed in the PACWEST provincials starting Feb. 27 at CapU’s Centre for Sport and Wellness.
Before that, they will host 17-5 Camosun College Feb. 21 (8 p.m.) and 22 (3 p.m.) to wrap the regular season.
