A new face and a repeat defender earn Athlete of the Week recognition going into the PACWEST Provincial Championship next weekend.
Taylor Melnyk
Taylor Melnyk is the Capilano University Blues women’s Athlete of the Week.
The second-year forward scored the first two goals of her career as part of a 3-3 comeback effort Sunday at VIU. With her team facing two different two-goal deficits in the first half, Melnyk had the response for CapU, including a left-footed blast from the 18-yard box to get on the board, and she then poked home a loose ball in the area after a Blues corner to get her team within one at halftime.
In the second half, still down a goal in the 67th minute, Melnyk accepted a nice feed from Maya Smith and made a nice cross to the box that was headed home by Sophie Pather. Melnyk’s two goals and assist secured the Blues a point against the conference-leading Mariners.
Tommy Millar
Tommy Millar is the Capilano University Blues men’s Athlete of the Week.
The third-year captain made a big difference for the Blues in an undefeated weekend at VIU as he set up the first goal of the weekend, allowing Sebastian Cirotto to run onto a ball and finish. On Sunday, Millar was tapped to take a penalty kick in the early going and made no mistake for his second goal of the season.
Millar was a pillar in the middle of the park for CapU, breaking up opposition attacks and helping his team get up the field.
