Mathilde Gionet and Mégane Gagnon scored a brace each to lead les Aigles du Collège Ahuntsic to a 5-0 win over the Capilano University Blues under the lights in Squamish Wednesday in the final game of the day at the CCAA Women's Soccer National Championship.
The winning goal came off the foot of Clémence Dufort in the 11th minute. What looked to be a crossing service caused confusion for the Blues and ended up clearing the heads of all defenders and the keeper, landing in the back of the net. Gionet scored her first of the night shortly after, giving Ahuntsic a 2-0 lead at halftime.
Ahuntsic displayed impressive pace throughout the match, carrying the ball with speed into enemy territory and backing up the Blues defenders. They used that to expand their advantage early in the second, with Gionet’s second followed by a goal in the run of play from Gagnon and then a penalty-kick goal from the second-year midfielder.
Ahuntsic advances to play Concordia-Edmonton Thursday in a 5:30 p.m. start while Capilano takes on MSVU with kickoff at 12:30 p.m.
