First goals for several players led to the first win of the season and four key points in the PACWEST standings on the weekend for the Capilano Blues.
In a road game at Langara Saturday, Sophie Pather scored on a header, finishing a cross from Alex Roed in the 31st minute for what would prove to be the winning goal in a 5-0 victory.
Maya Smith added to the lead in the second half before newcomer Michaela Salvino, making her Blues debut, struck for a pair of stunners to make it a four-goal lead. First, she finished off a set piece with a diving header after beautiful service from Kai Belbin and then she struck from distance, blasting a strike to the top right corner from almost 30 yards out.
Sasha Faris rounded out the Blues scoring with her first in Capilano colours, finishing a feed from Amelia Mori in the waning moments. Amaya Salvino stopped everything coming her way for the clean sheet and first win.
Returning home to Lillooet Park Sunday for a match against the Vancouver Island University (VIU) Mariners, CapU was hemmed into their own end for much of the opening frame and went down a goal in the 9th minute but drew level late in the first half when Mori forced a turnover from the VIU keeper and scored into an unguarded net.
In the first minute of the second half, it was Alexis King's turn as she converted a bouncing ball for her first Blues goal after a wonderful corner delivery from Belbin. Capilano was not able to make the lead hold up with VIU equalizing in the 62nd minute.
Capilano is home both dates of the coming weekend, hosting VIU again on Saturday, Sept. 21 in a 1 p.m. start before Douglas College comes on Sunday for a Noon kickoff.
