A veteran and a rookie take center stage and earn Athlete of the Week recognition.
Mya Fraser is the Capilano University Blues women’s Athlete of the Week.
The fifth-year defender scored two game-winning goals in the Blues bronze medal performance at the CCAA National Championship last week.
On Friday, it was an early goal by the fifth-year defender that made the difference. Capilano started strong, immediately pushing the ball into an attacking position, which earned them a corner kick less than five minutes in. Michaela Salvino lofted a stellar delivery to the front of the Seneca goal, where Fraser got above the crowd and headed it home for the only goal of the game.
On Saturday, the Blues used the same formula for success as they did on Friday when they defeated Seneca by the same score: an early goal, headed home by Fraser on a set piece curled to the front of the area by Salvino, which proved to be the game-winner.
She was named a CCAA Tournament All-Star for her efforts.
Xavier Masztak is the Capilano University Blues men’s Athlete of the Week.
The 6-foot-5 import from Sydney, Australia, was a force at outside hitter on the weekend, helping the Blues to their first two wins of the season.
In Friday’s game at CBC, Masztak rang up 14 kills and two aces from the service line to help the Blues to a 3-1 win over the Bearcats.
In Saturday’s five-set nailbiter, he was even better as he totalled 21 kills and two more aces to lead the Blues to the weekend sweep on the road.
