The Capilano Blues are undefeated on the field which will host the 2024 CCAA Women’s Soccer National Championship in a month’s time.
Still, like several of the Blues results of late, it wasn’t a win either as they worked to a 0-0 tie against the Langara College Falcons on the all-new, FIFA-grade turf at the CapU Squamish campus. It brings CapU’s season mark to two wins, three losses and five ties. Capilano is now on a four-game undefeated streak including three ties in a row.
Sunday’s game with the Falcons saw the Blues earn the edge in possession, particularly in the second half but they couldn’t find a solution for the final touch and bring home a win.
Sophie Pather had a couple of early opportunities but was turned away by some desperate Falcons defenders. In the second half, subs Kaitlyn Johnson, Alex Roed and Sasha Faris looked on the verge of scoring success but Langara’s back line managed to get in the way. Similarly, CapU couldn’t make anything of the seven corners they earned on the day.
Amaya Salvino made four saves for her second clean sheet of the season.
On Saturday at Douglas College, the Blues and Royals were scoreless well into the second half when Douglas’s Katie Buckly made a long run into the CapU area and finished. This was shortly after Johnson had a glorious chance on an unguarded goal but the Royals’s Haylee Rodgers made a heroic run back to block the shot near the goal line.
Pather was able to rescue the Blues on the day with her third goal of the season, a beautiful goal in the 83rd minute as she ran almost the length of the Douglas half of the field and first-timed a ball from Maya Smith off the crossbar and down.
Ella Jennings was strong all weekend, breaking up opposition passes while Erika Di Lorenzo was effective at right back through all 90 minutes in both games. The Blues have a week off for Thanksgiving and finish the PACWEST schedule with two games at Vancouver Island University.
