The Capilano University Blues capped off 2024 on a high note, defeating the College of the Rockies (COTR) Avalanche 3-1 (25-15, 22-25, 25-15, 25-17) in their final PACWEST volleyball match before the holiday break. With the win, the Blues improved to a 5-5 record, securing 3rd place in the standings as they head into the new year.
The match began with a slow start for Capilano, trailing 6-3 early in the first set. However, once their offense ignited, there was no stopping them. Led by 4th-year outside hitter Nnya Mbaoma, who notched 15 kills, the Blues stormed back to claim the set 25-15. Mbaoma’s powerful swings set the tone for a dominant performance.
In the second set, the Avalanche responded, capitalizing on their early momentum. Despite a late rally from the Blues, including key points from 3rd-year outside hitter Abi Betker, COTR held on for a 25-22 win to tie the match at 1-1.
The Blues reasserted control in the third set, delivering a clinic on both offense and defense. Middle blockers Natalie Rourke and Sibby Bos were instrumental, combining for 17 kills and 4 blocks. The Blues' defense held COTR to just six kills in the set, cruising to another 25-15 victory.
The fourth set was more competitive, but Capilano’s depth and resilience shone through in the closing stages. Betker, who recorded 11 kills and five aces, delivered crucial points down the stretch, while Annika Kuznik added seven kills and four aces. The Blues pulled away late to secure the set 25-17 and the match.
First-year setter Mollie English was the engine behind the Blues’ potent attack, racking up 45 assists and spreading the ball effectively to her hitters.
With this win, the Blues enter the holiday break in a strong position, holding a 5-5 record and sitting 3rd in the PACWEST standings. They’ll look to build on this momentum when they return to action on January 10th against Douglas College in New Westminster.
