Erika Di Lorenzo’s first-ever goal for the Capilano Blues was a highly dramatic one, a game-winner coming in the waning moments of a 1-0 victory over the Mount St. Vincent University Mystics.
In minute 86, the Blues were awarded a free kick and Michaela Salvino delivered a long, bending drive that drew a cluster of players near the far post, but it was first-year defender Di Lorenzo who got a head on it to knock it home.
Capilano had an edge in possession and scoring chances over the course of the game, including a flurry of chances about 30 minutes in that included a drive off the crossbar by Maya Smith. MSVU keeper Morgan Gillis had just about all the answers in goal for the Mystics until Di Lorenzo solved her in the late going. The Mystics pushed forward and there were some nervous moments for the Blues in the four minutes of added injury time but they managed to hold on to the final whistle.
Capilano takes on the loser of the Seneca-Montmorency game in a 12:30 p.m. kickoff Friday while MSVU faces Brandon Friday at 10 a.m.
