For the second weekend in a row, the Capilano Blues scored one goal over two games but managed to make it count to maximum effect and a key 1-0 home win over Langara.
The win allowed CapU to draw even with Langara, not only for the weekend but in the PACWEST standings, where both teams carry 5-3 records. Langara to Saturday’s game at their home park by a 2-0 score.
Sunday’s game at Lillooet Park was scoreless well into the second half when Riley Marshall got on the business end of a Tommy Millar corner kick and flicked it past the Falcons keeper. CapU withstood the Langara attack over the final third of the game and, as they have done four times now this season, hung on for a one-goal win.
CapU did well to get in the way of several Falcon shot attempts and Brandon Lecce was there to gather anything that did get through for his first shutout of the season. Tensions were high in the waning moments, with yellow cards handed out to Capilano’s Adam Majuerae and Kaden Routley and another to Langara’s Zyahn Adlam as time expired.
On Saturday at Langara, Taigo Shimada’s tally was all the Falcons needed as he accepted a header pass from Taynour Bashghareh and punched it home from the edge of the six-yard box. Graydon Sherle was well positioned and got a piece of the shot but not enough to keep it out.
In the second half, former Blues forward Beckham Hatch struck from distance to add the insurance for Langara.
The weekend saw the debut in Blues colours for midfielder Alex Baldry and the North Vancouver product made his presence known, getting in the way of Langara attackers and repeatedly winning possession for his side.
Just four games now remain in the PACWEST regular season. Capilano pays a visit to Douglas (2-5-1) on Saturday in a 3:30 p.m. start and then hosts Langara again Sunday in a 2:30 p.m. kickoff at the new CapU Squamish turf field.
