The Capilano Blues managed just one goal over the course of a home weekend against Vancouver Island University (VIU) and Douglas College but were able to make it count for a win in the Sunday finale.
Facing VIU Saturday for the second-straight game at Lillooet Park after a Blues 2-1 win on Sept. 15, the visiting Mariners were in no mood to drop another one. VIU employed a physical brand of football and got the winner in the 25th minute off the foot of Brian Bland.
Capilano generated five first-half corner kicks, including three in less than five minutes, but quality service from Tommy Millar didn’t result in a goal.
VIU added insurance midway through the second half and added the final tally in injury time as CapU pushed all players forward in attempts to get on the board.
On Sunday with Douglas in town, another grind of a game unfolded with a determined Royals side resisting the Blues attack and claiming the shots advantage as well though they were only able to direct a pair on goal which were both handled by Graydon Sherle, who posted his second clean sheet on the campaign.
CapU got the winner 10 minutes into the second half when Sebastian Cirotto picked the pocket of Royals netminder Benoit Lutz and went in alone on the unguarded goal to deposit his fifth of the season.
Douglas threw all they had at the Blues over the final 20 minutes but gutsy defending from Millar, Riley Marshall and some timely clearances by Adam Majuerae helped preserve the win.
As the midway point of the season arrives, Capilano carries a 4-2 mark which ties them atop the PACWEST standings with VIU. Both teams have nine goals for and nine against as well.
Next up, CapU visits Langara (3-3) for a 2:30 p.m. start Saturday before a home kickoff rematch Sunday at 2:30 p.m. at Lillooet Park.
