Sereena Hothi wasted little time announcing her intentions to be a critical piece of the Capilano Blues fortunes for the 2024-25 season.
The fourth-year forward from Delta collected 18 points on Friday’s opening night against the Douglas College Royals, a new career high for her with Capilano, and though the Blues dropped the opener, Hothi’s contribution helped CapU close the gap in the second half and set the stage for her to have another big game the next night.
Capilano was done in Friday by a saggy second quarter that saw the Royals turn a one-point first quarter advantage into a 17-point edge at half time.
Hothi and the Blues were better in the second half but ran out of time as they got to within two buckets at the end in a 71-67 final. Hothi added seven boards and two steals to her stat line while Barcha Hnizdilova had 16 point and nine rebounds.
Australian import Mia Parkin had 14 and eight in her collegiate debut for the Blues.
In Saturday’s rematch, CapU was tentative out of the gate but got into a rhythm in the second quarter to take a nine-point lead to the break.
A dominant third quarter for the Blues made the outcome all but decided as their advantage grew to 18. Douglas chipped away in the final frame but the final horn sounded on a 65-57 Blues win.
Jenna Griffin was the Blues points leader Saturday with 13 in just 14 minutes of work. She went 3-of-4 from three but her night finished early as she sustained an injury that may keep her out of the Blues lineup when they return to action after a bye week.
There were five Blues players that scored in double figures Saturday with Parkin and Hnizdilova getting 12 each and Hothi and Maddy Coffin notching 11. Hnizdilova was one rebound shy of a double-double and Hothi filled the rest of her stat line with seven boards and three assists.
CapU has a bye this coming weekend and return to action Nov. 1 and 2 when the host Okanagan College. Tipoff will be 6 p.m. on the Friday and 1 p.m. on the Saturday at Capilano’s Centre for Sport and Wellness.
