CapU Blues sports info
Facing a depleted Okanagan College (OC) Coyotes side that was only able to dress seven players in both games, the Capilano Blues took care of business, picking up a sweep on the road to remain ahead of Langara in the PACWEST standings.
A dominant first half paved the way for the Blues in Friday’s opener with Barcha Hnizdilova scoring 11 of her team-high 20 in the first two quarters while also swiping three steals in the opening frame. The Blues built a 32-point lead at halftime on the way to a 90-59 victory.
Kim Tiu provided a spark off the bench early on Friday, hitting a three and completing an and-one while Mia Parkin hit from downtown as part of nine first-quarter points.
Lauren Tomlinson dialed in from distance with a trio of threes in the second quarter to help put the Blues in the driver’s seat. Mina Djordjevic was productive in 16 minutes off the bench with 13 points and six boards.
Saturday’s result was a similar story with CapU holding the Coyotes to single-digit scoring in three of the four quarters while piling up 33 points of their own in a lopsided third quarter on the way to a 97-46 win.
Capilano used the three-ball Saturday, hitting 12 times from beyond the arc with Tiu and Jenna Griffin each hitting five triples. Sereena Hothi was able to find some rhythm Saturday, scoring 12 points on 6-of-11 shooting, an encouraging sign for the Blues as the playoffs near.
The pair of wins over OC puts the Blues at 9-13, one game up on 8-14 Langara, who finish the regular season this coming weekend against first-place Vancouver Island University (VIU).
Capilano hosts Camosun (3-19) Feb. 21 (6 p.m) and 22 (1 p.m.) and the visitors will be a motivated group as they could overtake OC for the final playoff berth. As for Langara, it will be a tall order to get wins over VIU as the Mariners have not yet locked up first place. Columbia Bible College could still overtake them if the results go their way in the final weekend.
The PACWEST provincials are Feb. 27 to Mar. 1 at Capilano University’s Centre for Sport and Wellness.
